Can we eat our ways into Mensa? Well, I doubt it - but here are some proven ways that we can increase our mental awareness and thinking ability!

Ginkgo: Ginkgo not only increases the supply of blood and oxygen tot he brain, but also this plant has been proven to increase the ability of our brain cells to make use of glucose. Hence, improving our energy production, nerve signal transmissions, and brain wave tracings.

With ginkgo, most people note some improvement in just two to three weeks, however, others may take up to twelve weeks for its effectiveness to be noticed. Studies show that the longer the treatment is continued the more obvious and lasting the result.  One study of 750 patients were administered ginkgo for varying periods of time, ranging from two weeks to 12 months. Even those who were on the treatment for a period of 12 months found that improvement was continuing.

Ginkgo is clearly a powerful brain food, yet it is considered extremely safe. There haven't been any significant adverse reactions to ginkgo reported.

Vitamin E & Vitamin C: Especially Spinach and Strawberry Extract! An experiment carried out by the US researchers showed that if rats are fed a diet that contains added antioxidant for six months, the rate of mental decline is slowed when compared to rats fed a conventional diet. The rats that were fed a diet containing spinach had the fewest age-related declines in mental function. Those eating the added strawberry extract were next, followed by rats receiving added vitamin E. (Vitamin E is often used in antioxidant studies because of its proven antioxidant properties).

Researchers have found a link in relation to antioxidant damage to the brain and the onset of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The phytochemicals in spinach and strawberry extract, particularly those with antioxidant properties, could provide protection against the onset of these degenerative diseases. Therefore, foods such as spinach and strawberry extract may be more effective than just pure vitamin E because foods and extracts contain a variety of phytochemicals rather than just one active ingredient.

The recommended dosage is between 30 and 200 international units of Vitamin E a day, along with 100 to 250 mg of vitamin C. An immediate effect on your memory may not be noticed from taking these antioxidants, however, these vitamins serve as insurance. You take your dosage now, and reap its benefits years later.

Glutamic acid (glutamate): Glutamic acid (glutamate) is abundant in both animal and vegetable proteins and is found in high concentrations in the human brain. Glutamic acid, which is important to brain function, is the only amino acid metabolized in the brain. Glutamic acid, with the aide of vitamin B6 and manganese, is a precursor of gaba (gamma-aminobutyric acid), an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Glutamic acid helps transport potassium into the spinal fluid and is itself an excitatory neurotransmitter. Glutamic acid thus has been used in the treatment of fatigue, parkinsonism, schizophrenia, mental retardation, muscular dystrophy, and alcoholism. Supplemented as L-glutamine, it penetrates the blood-brain barrier and can be used as a brain fuel. Additionally, research has proven that L-glutamine, in a dose of 500 mg. four times daily, decreases the craving for alcohol and is now commonly used in alcoholism clinics. L-glutamine also seems to have a direct relation to reducing our cravings for sugar and carbohydrates  making it helpful for some people in dealing with obesity or sugar abuse. Further studies prove that it may also help in accelerating the healing of ulcers
